Sebastien was not the best at interacting within the towns that his companions and he visited. His cold demeanor and blunt words won few hearts and so usually Damian and Dakota did the talking. Now, of course, this did not mean that the witch refused to speak to anyone; he just was not as willing to speak to someone unless it was necessary. The fewer people who were comfortable with his presence and could identify him with ease, the better. He had been fortunate thus far with not being recognized and he did not want to tempt fate with getting out of his comfort zone anytime soon.

This was not so bad when they were passing by towns, but now that the Constantine brothers have seemingly settled in New Hope with no immediate plans of leaving he had to be far more cautious about who knew him. He, obviously, had to keep this from his friends, which made it all the more difficult. His attitude didn't help him, anyways. He was good besides the fact with being inconspicuous, so he had that going for him. Damian and Dakota were able to alleviate any situations Sebastien may have accidentally caused through speaking, although there were times where he had to fend for himself. The brothers weren't always there -busy with this or that- and so if he needed to do something he had to go alone. This may have been why some of the locals knew him (not from the bars or run ins, anyways), but he tried to make his visits as short as possible. He didn't like overextending his stay.

Today was the day that he needed to visit the apothecary. Damian had been hinting towards going after a bounty and with Dakota busy with something else -what that something else was Sebastien did not know- he needed to see if he could get some supplies just in case. Something just in case either of the brothers became injured; something for if they needed to drug their target or perhaps someone who may have known where the target may have been (at least this was his own approach which he may or may not have gone with); also, perhaps as an afterthought, something for Damian's headaches the day after excessive celebrating. More than likely he would then slip the items into what they as a group already had and watch the brothers be confused if they noticed something was different -not so much out of anonymous kindness than mild amusement. One would have thought that they would have put two and two together about this, but then again Sebastien was pretty good at being stealthy. Or, maybe, the subject was never simply brought up when the brothers spoke to Sebastien and they knew what he did though not why.

Sebastien approached the location of the apothecary -owned by a Miss Sofia Cross, whom he had met with only a few brief times in the past. He hesitated for a moment before he opened the door and stepped inside. He peered around the store, calling out whether he spotted her immediately or not, "Miss Cross, if you have a moment, I wish to speak with you about some of your products." He wasn't necessarily rude (at least intentionally); he was perhaps just too quick to the point for small talk to occur. At least from his side of the conversation.

Sofia was a cautious woman - Cautious, not paranoid. She was careful of her actions and how much she revealed to others but she also liked to live a life on the town, court lovers, and make friends when appropriate. Sofia felt comfortable in doing such things because the ghosts of her past were haunting barnyards and cottages back east on cold rocky shores that were a completely different world from New Hope's prairies and muddy plains - She severely doubted that they would ever catch up with her here. But just in case, she had made changes. Sophia LaCroix had become Sofia Cross, a simple enough change that folks would probably never catch on. The housewife and farm girl had become an independent Apothecary which was a noble profession that distinguished her well from her former self. And, just to be safe, Sofia kept her eyes and ears open. When the bounty hunters initially came to New Hope she had gotten itchy feet and thought of fleeing… But to where? She had a history with one of them - Sebastien. The first time Sofia saw him in the street she was frozen to the spot and felt as if he'd recognize her in an instant. But of course, he did not. None of them did. Sofia passed beneath their gaze like sheep beneath a shepherd's staff and not a one of them seemed to notice her. So, she was happy. She willed herself not to worry. Unfortunately, that week had brought a new development in the saga when Sofia stopped by the sheriff's office to speak with Ashley and saw a new poster on the walls. No, her face was not drawn there, but Sophia La Croix' name was listed and wanted to be taken back east for questioning. The one silver lining was that other names were on there that Sofia knew - Outlaws she'd met on her journey and, most interestingly, Sebastien Thomas himself. Sofia was not sure what to think of it. In part, she wanted to panic and run. Rationally, Sofia knew that she could not. There wasn't even anywhere to go and besides, Sofia had roots here now… She put herself to work while she thought about things and abstained from her nightly saloon visits for a few evenings just to let the world calm down. Given that the apothecary was in need of some love and attention, Sofia found plenty to occupy herself with. On the day that Sebastien entered her shop Sofia was preparing an order alone at the counter and the sound of her name initially made her smile.

"Yes?" Sofia looked up expectantly at the man who entered and asked to speak with her about her 'products.' The one speaking to her caught her off-guard. Instantly Sofia's heart sank and just as quickly fluttered to the surface of her chest and started to pound wildly. Her small expectant smile was gone and Sofia felt cold all over. But in the interest of remaining calm, Sofia reassured herself that all was well and slowly - exceptionally slowly, as if she were approaching a large bear - untied her apron strings and walked around the counter.

"Yes, I have a moment," Sofia put her hands slowly at her sides and stood awkwardly in front of the bounty hunter. There was the front door, the back door, and a few good windows, Sofia reminded herself. She had extra cash in a can above the stove if she needed to grab it in a hurry. She lacked weapons. But that could not be helped. Just in case she was overreacting, however, Sofia put on a tight smile. "How can I help you, sir?"

Bounties were such annoying inconveniences. Do one wrong thing and your face ended up on one of those fancy posters that people then grabbed for a chance at glory. Well, perhaps that was a bit of an exaggeration; you had to have done something to have one made. And Sebastien had definitely killed one too many people to get away with it. He certainly had not been on a path of redemption during those years -at least he was only going after lawful bounties now? Perhaps his time with the Constantine brothers could have been considered as some form of penance for all the crimes he had committed and that he would be a better man in the end. Some may have actually believed that to be true.

He had been pretty good about changing his appearance from Theodore Wells to Sebastien Thomas. Different clothing, different hairstyle (it was far more manageable short than long), and even different grooming methods -as in he didn't shave as often. Even then, with all of these changes and a made-up background, if someone were to compare his looks now to his poster's looks they would see the resemblances. If they were smart enough they may have been able to put two and two together and realize that they were in fact one and the same; if they truly believed he was hiding something, that is. He was diligent enough to take down the posters as soon as he saw them, but there were probably some that slipped away. Not only that, but there was a possibility people saw the posters beforehand and started to take note. When this happened he either managed to convince whoever accused him of such things that he was in fact someone else or he left town as fast as he could. Unfortunately, if he wanted to remain with the Constantine brothers, he was going to have to stay put. He had seen a few of the old bounties about though he had easily taken them down; he didn't want to risk being caught now, of all times and places. Maybe a part of him feared death and repercussions -maybe a part of him just didn't want to lose another group of people he actually cared about. He had already been through two Hells already.

The woman answered him after he called out and he waited patiently for her to approach him. Impatience was never a problem with him -if it meant that he would be successful, he would wait for a long time. Now, of course, he did not like idleness so much and valued at least even mental plans over simply staring off into space. When she finally did appear, he had the vague sense that she was uncomfortable. He didn't blame her; he was, after all, a bounty hunter, even if he only now went after bounties that the law condoned. He may not have also been that pleasant of company due to his blunt and serious nature. Most folks weren't all that comfortable hanging around him -at least from his experience- and if alcohol wasn't involved? It was a miracle more people didn't avoid him while they were sober. Though, the less people he dealt with, the better. Even after the apothecary spoke and smiled he could tell his presence was not an entirely good thing and that she wanted to be somewhere else at the moment. Or, maybe, more accurately, she wanted him somewhere else. But he had supplies to purchase so for right now neither of them were going to be away from each other.

"I need to know if you have anything that can help tend to wounds, even if it only helps a little. A doctor is no good if the wounded person bled out hours ago. Also, perhaps something that can put someone to sleep or at the very least hinder them." He listed the two requests as though he was having a casual conversation (well, maybe not so casual as mundane). He did pause for a few moments before adding, "Maybe something for headaches as well, if there is a simple solution for such a thing. My companion is prone to drinking in excess when celebrating." After he finished speaking he glanced around the store in slight curiosity before returning his gaze onto Sofia.

Sofia wished that she had a mask or a bag to quickly pull over her head and she wished that she could do so inconspicuously. Every second that Sebastien was looking at her ramped Sofia's heartbeat up just that much until she felt that she was going to pass out while waiting for his answer. She had a long, bold face that more than one cruel person had called horse-like throughout Sofia's life and after so many times she was eager to believe it… She didn't pity herself for it. But Sofia was fairly certain that such a face mad her recognizable. Perhaps he had never seen her face before but Sofia knew his.

"I need to know if you have anything that can help tend to wounds, even if it only helps a little."

Sofia could have thrown her arms up to the heavens when Sebastien asked her about medicines. Either he was trying to trick her into feeling comfortable and secure or he had legitimately come to her for medicines… Sofia tried not to jump to conclusions but when he asked about the medicine she did allow herself to smile softly and ease the tension in her face.

"Yes… wounds, and some sedation…" Sofia quietly consented to his request in a murmur and nodded her head. Sebastian continued,

"Maybe something for headaches as well, if there is a simple solution for such a thing. My companion is prone to drinking in excess when celebrating."

Sofia nodded again and her eyes brightened when Sebastien briefly looked away. While he was in profile she studied him well only to smile tensely when he looked at her again. She remembered the curve of his ear and the nape of his neck, just how she'd seen him from behind all those years ago. Sofia had forgotten all about him until he appeared in New Hope. Even after he'd appeared she'd only fretted for a short while… But there had been a time when she worried a great deal about this man. She was younger then, Sofia supposed, and a bit more desperate. But he looked healthy, didn't he? Despite what she had done to him. He was a completely different man now in style and in name. The poison that Sofia had slipped Sebastian could have easily killed him but here he was. Despite the risk, she had to say that she was happy about that.

"…I'm sorry," Sofia apologized once she realized that she'd been staring at him with that same tensely puzzled look on her face. A hint of pink dusted Sofia's cheeks and she looked away to go to the counter, "Yes, those are reasonable requests. I have antiseptic but what you'll want is a good clotting agent if you have to travel a long distance… Laudanum is good to put folks to sleep but it's an opiate… So," Sofia walked around the counter and looked over her shoulder at Sebastien quickly as if she were sizing him up. She spoke fast. "It's abused easily. And for headaches…"

Sofia took down a simple brown glass bottle of pills and slid them across the counter toward Sebastian with a cheeky smirk.

"Perhaps you've heard of aspirin."

When Sebastien came back from his 'hibernation' of sorts all those years ago -well, five to be exact- he found it a lot more difficult to accomplish tasks than it was when he first started. He had taken up bounties that he had usually gone after, but if it hadn't been for one specific person maybe he could have been more successful... This person in particular, Sophia LaCroix, was wanted for questioning by the law about the death of her late husband, Samuel LaCroix. Simple enough; catch the woman, bring her to some sheriff, and get his pay. He had been avoiding the more risky and shady jobs since he changed his name so at the very least it would seem that he was a lawful man that was only doing what others couldn't do. The big issue that came from all of this was the fact that right as he was on the woman's trail, he fell ill. From what? He wasn't too sure, though he had to suspect it might have been the food or ale he had drank the night before. Someone had attempted to poison him and he sure as hell did not like that. He was practically bed-ridden for a month and it cost him the bounty, which displeased him even more. Thankfully his reputation wasn't sullied -though he did try to be on the down low so that there was little chance of him being recognized- and it wasn't too long after that he met the Constantine brothers. Maybe he might have fallen on the wayside again if it weren't for that incident; maybe it held him back as much as he thought it did. He tried not to think about his failures that often.

He noted the apothecary relax after he requested the certain items -she most likely was glad he was only here as a customer and would leave as soon as he got what he wanted. Maybe that was a bit cynical and saddening to think of himself as being the sort of person others did not want to be around, but if he had to admit it he would consider the feelings mutual concerning not wanting to be around others. There was a sort of disconnect that he was never able to fix, even from his early days, and so he would rather be on a bounty or sitting by himself drinking the night away. Unfortunately this could not be the case for him, especially concerning Dakota and Damian -he had an image to live up to- and this led him to having to socialize with others. Out of necessity, of course, though there had been one too many times he had been dragged into a casual conversation because the person thought they were 'buddies'. He was surprised he tolerated the brothers' interactions the way he did. He wasn't too sure if he was lowering his guard or if they actually were different from others.

He nodded curtly at the woman's words, even though it was fairly obvious that she was more talking to herself than him. Maybe she was attempting to recall what she had in stock -he supposed a good owner or at least worker would remember what was in the store- though the awkward silence that fell afterwards gave him the impression that something else was on her mind. When he looked away and then peered back at her the tension increased on her appearance again, so it gave him pause as to why she was acting the way she was. Perhaps it was simply overlooking it -he had been rather blunt about his request, and maybe the sedation one might have put her off a little. The business of bounty hunters could have been uncomfortable to those who had never partaken in the job and even contemplating about attempting to put someone to sleep might have made their minds mad with worry. In all honestly, he really didn't care all that much about what people thought about him as long as they weren't suspicious.

"It is all right." Sebastien replied when she had apologized for... something. Maybe looking at him too long; social norms dictated not staring at someone for long periods of time. This might have been why people were very uncomfortable when conversing with Sebastien, then. When the apothecary turned to go to the counter and spoke he listened, following her once she started to move. He remained silent as she continued to speak, taking a moment to nod during one of her pauses. When she trailed off concerning headaches and went to grab a bottle he peered at the item with mild curiosity written on his face -perhaps just enough to show a little change from his typically serious mood. This did not last long, for when she spoke again he answered with, "In name, yes. I am not sure if I have ever seen it used." He reached out to take the bottle and lift it to examine what the pills looked like. "I am to assume they work since you the one are suggesting them?" Ordinary people might have began to babble on about how they were annoyed with their friend's or companion's drinking habits, but not Sebastien. He had no time for such idle chat -when talking business, anyways.

Sofia was in her element when she spoke in long, rambling terms about the items in her apothecary. She took comfort in the thousands of colored glass bottles with their delicately-drawn labels and names and delighted even further in mixing and dividing the medication… Sebastian did not seem to mind her rambling but he was still staring at her. Sofia smiled a touch uneasily and presented him with the aspirin. She could distract him like this, she figured. Overpower him with words and facts and inane little stories until he just went away and thought that she was merely a strange woman. Only, Sofia didn't like bounty hunters. They were too clever. And for some damnable reason, he seemed awfully settled in New Hope. Sofia imagined that had something to do with the fact that there wasn't anything beyond their little town but prairie and hostiles…

"In name, yes. I am not sure I have ever seen it used."

Sofia watched him examine the pills through their glass bottle and question her, wondering if they worked. Well, she was used to that. Being an apothecary was 50% the job of acquiring, producing, and distributing medicines and 50% convincing folks that modern science could work.

"Yes, and I appreciate your vote of confidence," Sofia acknowledged that he took her to be an authority. Oh, if only he knew. Should he? That was - Should he know? "They work very well for those recovering from… Celebration, as you put it. It's a new drug in branding but I'm told that ancients used it in Greece. Please?"

Sofia held out one of her light, too-soft hands. Doing the leisurely indoor work of an Apothecary that crafted creams and salves left her much paler and more tender than other woman in New Hope. Sofia was happy to be different in that way. Her skin was brushed with a hint of freckles and tan but far less than other folks in town. Sofia took the bottle from Sebastian as politely as possible and left him so that she could walk down the counter and thin muslin cloth bag.

"How is it? Being a bounty hunter, I mean," Of course she'd know he was a bounty hunter - To acknowledge it was not to be suspicious. Everyone in New Hope knew who the bounty hunters and lawmen were. Sofia looked at him through a loose curl and brushed it back with a self-conscious smile when she returned to him and prepared to collect the remainder of his order, "Is it frightening? Dangerous? Thrilling?"

Sebastien's eyes flickered back to Sofia when she spoke again. Vote of confidence? He wasn't too sure if he liked the fact that he had shown uncertainty about knowing something. It meant weakness -ignorance, even- and the enemy might take every single scrap of that to use against him. What enemies? He wasn't too sure -the apothecary seemed harmless enough. But if she were to speak to one of her friends or another customer and it happens to slip out? It was a bit strange to think about such a thing happening, though he could never be too careful, especially since he still wasn't entirely sure what else this 'aspirin' could do. Could it also poison others? Cause them to become nauseated or drowsy? Sofia did say it would help with headaches -at least this was implied- though was there a trade off in return for that being cured? Perhaps he would have to observe Damian use it and keep in mind any sort of side effects or anything of the sort for future reference. It might have other uses.

He had looked down at the bottle again as she had spoke about what the pills did, though when she said please and held out a hand he looked back at her once more. He paused for a moment before slowly handing the bottle to her. His head followed her as she walked away from him though his gaze then slowly wandered to look around the store again. Maybe if he had more fae blood in him he may not have needed to visit apothecaries as often -he wasn't complaining on that front, though. People didn't badger him to create charms. There was still the aspect of actually talking to people, however, that put him at a great disadvantage...

Sebastien quickly turned his attention back to Sofia when she began asking him questions. She wanted to know about what he did? It was probably out of morbid curiosity; most folks did not dare to lead the life Sebastien and his companions had. Maybe it was fascinating hearing about hunting other men who had done wrong things -at least, if they were talking about lawful bounty hunters. "It is a job." He hesitated for a moment before deciding to add some more to his statement even though he was not a fan of that, "There are risks to it, which is why I am taking precautions. In order for my companions and I to survive, we need the necessary items and strategies so that we are not caught off-guard." Another pause occurred. "It is not for the faint of heart or will." Still a little strange that she was curious about it, though again he chalked it up as curiosity. Being an apothecary must have been a risk-free and simple job so there may have been some wonder to learning about other dangerous careers. Though, he had already pondered over that -was there something else to the picture that he wasn't seeing? He decided to brush it aside and await for either the items he had requested or more questions from Sofia.

Sofia thought she was doing a very fine job of keeping up as much of a calm, collected facade as a woman should in front of a known bounty hunter but within the confines of her mind she was waging a battle with herself. Sebastien hesitated before giving her the pills back, it seemed, and then his eyes followed Sofia while she roamed the shelves. She asked him about his work because she was interested in her morbid sort of way and Sofia was also considering something quite drastic… Something like getting "in front of" the problem, as her mentor had once explained. Why run stumbling over rocks and roots and ruts in the road when you could turn around and face the stampede behind you head-on? That was her mentor's theory and it had served the old woman well. Could it serve Sofia well?

"It is a job," Sebastien answered just like a stableboy might answer and that made Sofia curious. She raised a brow at him and collected two smaller bottles on her way to a locked cabinet beneath the countertop. "There are risks to it, which is why I am taking precautions. In order for my companions and I to survive, we need the necessary items and strategies so that we are not caught off-guard."

Sofia looked up when Sebastien paused. She wondered if he was recalling anything.

"It is not for the faint of heart or will."

Sofia said nothing but to hum softly, "hmm." Her green eyes followed the rustling sound of keys while Sofia inserted her key into the lock of the cabinet and turned it. A muted clanking of glass followed and then Sofia placed one most sinister looking bottle on the wooden counter. Beneath her hand was the laudanum in its clear glass bottle with a thick cork stopper. The opiate was the color of blood-drenched rubies and seemed thick as blood when it sloshed slightly in its bottle. The label was plain and done in black. Sofia hated the stuff… But it was a necessary evil.

"You've been caught off guard before…" Sofia spoke softer than before now, betraying a sense of intimacy. She left her hand to rest on the laudanum while the cabinet sat open beneath the counter and the bag of Sebastien's other medicines sat forgotten a foot away. She wasn't looking at the trappings of her profession - For the moment, Sofia just wanted to look at his face. "Haven't you?"

In the time that Sebastien had been a bounty hunter, he had only messed up approximately two times. Now, of course, this was what he considered as 'messing up'; perhaps there were other jobs that he did not do so gracefully (he did have a bounty on his old self, after all) but he did not count those times in essence. They were not the brightest subjects for him and if he could avoid speaking about them he would have been golden. In all honesty, he would have preferred to lie instead of directly admitting he had made mistakes before. Sure, there was the whole deal with 'being human means you make mistakes' though did he really want that to be an obvious trait about him? Did he really want people to go and say, 'Oh, he's just a silly ol' human; I'm sure he has some sort of weakness.'? He would have preferred not to (even if he more identified being a human rather than a witch). Weakness was the sort of thing that could get you killed. The men and women Sebastien had put into their graves could attest to that.

His head tilted ever so slightly when Sofia hummed, though not much else was immediately said about what he had answered with. She was obviously retrieving some of the supplies he had requested; she had better things to do. Which was especially nice since it did not dawn on him that he may have spoken perhaps a little poorly on the subject, but at least he tried to be sociable? He wouldn't go as far as to say he was trying to seem like a normal human being per se -cue the 'he's just a human' response. Though, maybe being underestimated might work to his advantage and may have in the past, now that he thought about it... Still, being considered weak was not on the list of things he wanted to be. He might as well crawl into those holes that were dug for the dead.

Sebastien's mind had been a little preoccupied with his own thoughts when Sofia began to speak again. His eyes flickered back to her, tensing up all the while because what sort of question was that? So he had spoken poorly after all; she seemed to be hanging onto the fact that he may have been speaking from ill-gained experience. Maybe she was right -he didn't want to take the chance to expose his neck (figuratively speaking in this case). He glanced away from her, attempting to quickly think up an elegant enough response so that the subject would be dropped. Once he peered back at her, head tilting slightly, he answered with, "Miss Cross, if I have been caught off guard, I would have been dead by now." He took a moment to scan her face a bit more carefully, though while something was eating at the back of his mind oh so subtlety he continued with, "I am of the cautious sort because I have seen what carelessness has brought others; no good comes from it. I would presume that you, an individual who handles what can be considered to be life or death in certain cases, would understand and know what I mean?" Obviously he had told a little bit of a lie; he had messed up before. But... as long as he kept the assumptions at a low and he took care of those who became too suspicious -either that or left town, though in this case that might not be an option if he wanted to remain with the Constantine brothers- no one would know.

Or would they?

Would Sofia ever admit to making a mistake…? Not willingly, no. So why did she think a man who hunted human beings for a living would have any less pride than she did? Sebastien gave Sofia a certain sort of look, head tilted just so, and she expected that he would deny it.

"…if i have been caught off guard, I would be dead by now."

He continued to stare at her so Sofia tried to fight it but she couldn't help herself in the end - She smiled. Just a touch, really, only the faintest twinge of an awkward smile, but it was a smile nonetheless. He had been close to dead, hadn't he? That was why she smiled. Of course, Sofia was glad he was alright.

"I am of the cautious sort… I would presume that you, an individual who handles what can be considered to be life or death in certain cases, would understand and know what I mean?"

Sofia's twinge smile smoothed itself away and she cast her eyes down on to the bottle of laudanum under her hand. It probably wasn't too late to club him over the head with it, Sofia considered, but there was a reason why she'd had to sneak around him the last time. For one thing, he was fast. For another, Sofia just wasn't the violent type. Which is why she had to speak up. After all, he had very, very sharp eyes. When Sofia looked up again she looked far more contrite. There was the slight twinge of a smile again but it was more of a nervous tic than anything else. Sofia's hand tightened around the neck of the laudanum bottle as she held on to it for comfort.

"I do know what you mean. You can imagine what carelessness on my part could do to others… Which is why…"

Sofia cleared her throat and made it obvious that she was about to make a proclamation of sorts. Sofia rolled her shoulders backward and felt a slight bit taller and more in control of herself. This was her decision, Sofia told herself, win or lose. So that was comforting, right? Plainly, she was terrified.

"I know you were ill a few years back," Although they were alone in the little shop Sofia spoke softly. Leaving him with that thought at first, Sofia left the laudanum on the counter with Sebastien's other medicines and abandoned him at the counter so that she could sweep around it and go to the front door.

"I'm sorry - I'd like to make sure we stay lonely," Sofia explained away when she went to the door and locked it. She turned her back to it thereafter and looked to see how Sebastien reacted to this. It was wholly possible that she had the wrong man, Sofia figured, but it wasn't likely. "You've changed since then. It was because you were poisoned, wasn't it? That you got so ill I was afraid you'd die."

It hadn't been often that Sebastien had come face to face with his past. And, in all honesty, it wasn't the ghosts that haunted him; it may have been a widow, a child, a friend. Something more along those lines than not. He made sure he did a clean job, though a wanted poster was made for his head, hadn't it? There was only so much he could do before the fingers were pointed and the name-blaming began to fly -'Theodore Wells was the one! He's the one who killed 'im!' That was how he imagined the snowball started but a make-over of sorts and a name change later and now he was a free man again. More or less; he still had to be cautious about the wanted posters showing up again. Some people were smart and could put two and two together and he didn't want to risk the only ticket he had at a possibly better life. There were only so many ways he could cut his hair and change his clothes.

When Sofia first began to speak, he had imagined she would tell her that of course she had to be careful else she risked hurting someone else and leave it at that. However... there was more to her statement. At first it was a simple pause, then the clearing of the throat as though she was going to say something important. A lecture? Perhaps she had decided to refuse to sell her products to him after all? He could not necessarily blame her; he was going to use some of the items to potentially kill someone. There were those who were bound to have a guilty conscious even if they weren't directly involved with the situation. Though, perhaps she was going to give him something else to help him on his journey? The possibilities were endless in those few seconds in which it took for Sofia to continue speaking.

When none of those possibilities were brought up and she spoke of him being ill, he immediately became tense. Not in the sense of 'I'm now feeling uncomfortable'; no, he was gearing himself. He could have convinced himself that maybe she had been in another town and just happened to find out that he had been sick one time. Sebastien Thomas, though not an infamous name, might have been known around some parts due to the actions of the brothers and he -or, even, during the small amount of time he had been going after bounties before he met them. It all seemed reasonable -plausible, even- though he very well knew it was nothing like that. If it weren't for the fact of how those words were delivered, he may have been able to fall back to the previous conclusions. There was no more time for assumptions or petty daydreaming; this was someone he knew.

Perhaps not from the deep past, but far back enough that it narrowed down the possibilities. He had fallen ill while attempting to go after that Sofia LaCroix woman -severely ill, even- and had lost a chance at getting that bounty. He suspected someone had poisoned his food or drink and even though he was not entirely certain who that person might have been, well... it made sense that it was somehow tied to that woman. So... what to do?

The witch's gaze never left her after that, following her even when she had left the counter and made her way to the door. After speaking once again and locking it, the gears in Sebastien's head began to turn even more -much like a hunter would act when observing its prey. He briefly and quietly examined her as she spoke about him falling ill, claiming to be afraid that 'he would die'. He may have thought assumed the poisoner and the guilty person may have been separate -though never throwing out the possibility that the woman herself had tried to stall or more likely kill him- but now he had his potential answer. Of course he vaguely recognized her -she had not changed as much as he had, appearance wise anyways- and of course he figured what she had done. 'Wanted for questioning' was a convenient way to say 'The person is responsible though they left before we could catch them'. There were a few cases, of course, that were legitimate and innocent; his own case concerning his adoptive parents, for example. But who would have believed him? No one, so even if Sofia LaCroix had been innocent she was still wanted.

And now she had made the situation all the more deadly for herself.

With this in mind, Sebastien did not hesitate anymore. "That is a very strange thing to say, especially when another man had fallen dead beforehand from similar actions." Not circumstances, mind you -the crime of killing her husband had made it look like he had died from some sort of heart attack. While it might have looked as though it was some sort of flue at first for Sebastien, it became evident that he had been poisoned. And this woman had the gall to claim she had been worried? He began to slowly step towards her, deliberate and predatory in his movement as he continued to speak, "You should have been a little better at changing you name, Miss Cross -or, if we are to cast aside formalities at this point, Mrs. LaCroix, widow to the late Mr. LaCroix." She had managed to slip under his nose once; he was certain he was not going to make any mistakes again.

((Lemme know if Sebastien jumped to conclusions as to who she is too fast XD *Took me a little more time to type this up because I kept on jumping back and forth between their apps/what we discussed in the plotter ^.^*))

He hadn't spoken yet but Sebastien's eyes had changed, that much was painfully obvious. Sofia could feel his gaze on her skin now just like it was heat radiating from the wood stove in back. She didn't like that feeling but she had to press on and say what she needed to say. If he didn't know what Sofia was getting at then her poison almost certainly had addled his brain.

"That is a very strange thing to say, especially when another man had fallen dead beforehand from similar actions."

Sofia's heart had been beating wildly against her chest as it was and Sebastien's confirmation of knowledge did nothing to soothe its rhythm. So he wasn't as dumb as he looked, she thought, and searched his expression to gauge what it was that the bounty hunter was thinking. Certainly he wouldn't be foolish enough to try to take Sofia with him…? Not when his own face was on a poster? Unexpectedly, however, he moved…! Sofia drew back at a similar pace until she was only two steps away from pressing herself up against the door. It was very little comfort to know that the door was there. Sebastien's movements were catlike while Sofia might as well have been the wounded, grounded bird for all she could do to fly away in a hurry.

"You should have been a little better at changing your name, Miss Cross - or, if we are to cast aside formalities at this point, Mrs. LaCroix, widow to the late Mr. LaCroix."

Although she didn't have wings Sofia did have her pride. Sebastien's taunt was just what she needed to crease her brow and gain a bit of backbone.

"I won't entertain that name," Sofia was known to have a hard, masculine tone of voice that had been abandoned thus far with Sebastien. Thankfully, he prodded her emotions just rightly enough to make Sofia react in the way she felt most comfortable. "I won't entertain that bastard's name in here, not in my shop. If you knew--" Sofia chewed on her tongue a short moment and went on, "If you knew what that man was capable of you'd never say his name… But don't get yourself all big headed. I handed that to you. And I didn't even change my name so much. What about you? I've known Theodore Wells since the moment I laid eyes on you. There's even a portrait of you down at the sheriff's, if you haven't seen… Touch a hair on my head and we go in together.

It was an awfully foolish thing for Sofia to have locked the door, at least from Sebastien's point of view. It would have taken far too long for her to turn around and try to unlock it if she really wanted to escape. Shouldn't she have expected this, though? She had hindered her career, after all, and if she was not stupid or forgetful she would be aware of this. He did not take any slights towards him lightly -a trait that may have rubbed off on him from his fae adoptive parents. No law could account for vengeance and even if they still wanted her for questioning, well... either he was going to have to restrain himself or she was going to have to try to get herself out of the situation. Neither seemed likely to him at the moment.

When Sofia spoke, he tilted his head slightly. He could tell she was emotional over her former husband's name, even when he was only briefly mentioned. This was why the witch could not afford to have any sort of emotion tied to anything; it caused too much uncertainty. He couldn't afford to have anything go out of place -this scenario was an exact example of what he didn't want to happen. The enemy would not have any sympathy towards him, especially if an ally of his had been killed or was being threatened, so why should he show the same? He might have been a little reckless in his younger days (depending on how you view his motives) but he wasn't ignorant. He knew what went through their minds -on a basic level, the same type of things went through his own mind. Primal instincts and other things like that. The difference was that he did not hesitate when he was on the job.

Sofia then decided to pull a wild card; she said his real name. His previous name, mind you. This meant that someone had put the pieces together. This meant that at least a few other individuals might figure it out as well, which then meant he was going to have to look forward to dealing with said individuals either through words or actions. Perhaps settling down in one town was not such a great idea after all... He understood that convincing Sofia was going to be much more difficult because of what she was trying to get at, but perhaps through intimidation he might be able to keep her quiet. He couldn't lose now; not like this. "I do not believe the requirement to kill a person is based off of how you feel about them or marriage in general." Of course, he was being slightly hypocritical here; he did sometimes go after people if they had humiliated him or did anything to cause his ire. He tried to convince himself that it was based off the fact that if anyone heard what had happened and that he had not done anything they may not have taken him seriously. Who would want to listen to a man who was not willing to defend himself -either his honor or physical person? Emotion may have played more of a hand in that action than he would have liked to admit. "And as for this... Theodore Wells individual, I am curious as to why you think that I, a man of a different name, am the same as whoever that man is. I may be a bounty hunter but I have not done anything that has required the law to make a poster out of me. You cannot say the same." It would have been unfortunate if she had managed to get her hands on one of those posters -he could not dispute physical evidence so greatly. He could have gone the route of the lookalike or even the twin brother -if he really wanted to look like a buffoon- though it was more likely she had something planned. Perhaps all along. Could she have been that clever?... She did manage to slip poison into something that he had and run away without being caught, so maybe he was underestimating this woman more than he should have. He better pray that he could outsmart her with whatever plans she had in her mind.

It took a killer to know a killer.

"I do not believe the requirement to kill a person is based off of how you feel about them or marriage in general."

Woefully, Sofia found herself without any rebuttal. Her eyes were hard and her mouth tight as if she were trying to keep desperately anxious words from spewing out but she didn't actually say anything against Sebastien's… Theodore's?… words. Killing someone seemed senseless now. Sofia could never imagine doing it again and some parts of her regretting killing Samuel at all when maybe she could have just… Maimed him. Or trapped him for a time until she could get away. But at the time there seemed to be… No other option. She regretted it but if she could do it again… Then she probably would.

You couldn't stand in front of a judge and say that you'd do it again. Judges didn't take kindly to that. So why should she bother arguing it to him…?

"And as for this… Theodore Wells individual, I am curious as to why you think that I, a man of a different name, am the same as whomever that man is. I may be a bounty hunter but I have not done anything that has required the law to make a poster out of me. You cannot say the name."

The portrait would be a dead giveaway, would it not? That was why Sofia had stolen the first one that she saw - And her own, tacked up on the same board but lacking a portrait, thank the heavens. There were no images of Sofia LaCroix in the world that she knew of. Unfortunately for her, however, she really had been very lax in changing her name and never made any attempt to hide her origins in Massachusetts. Someone far dumber than Sebastien should have figured it out by then… If they cared to. Sofia didn't think anyone would ever care to.

"Using that same logic, I am curious as to why you think I am a husband murderer with a French name. I am a professional in this town and a well-known pacifist," Sofia pointed out. It was true - Ask anyone in New Hope. They would admit that Sofia slept with anything that walked but they could also point to instances where someone merely squishing a fly had caused her to fly off the handle. "Some might say you made a sloppy translation of 'LaCroix' and called it a day. But at any rate… Truly," Sofia was feeling boxed in but they were in a holding pattern. He wasn't advancing on her any longer - Was it that she was fending him off with her threat to expose him? Sofia dropped her chin and looked imploring into his eyes through blonde lashes, "I meant it. I was afraid you would die. I never wanted to hurt anyone. Can you say the same? Your intentions are good?"

The initial silence answered Sebastien's question -at least according to him. She was a killer yet she wanted to play the innocent victim? The world didn't work like that; either you toughened up or you were trampled under the boots of the accusers. It didn't mean you had to turn yourself in -he certainly hadn't- but he could tell that she was the type to hide behind that sort of title. Sympathy got you nowhere and it wasn't like many were sympathetic to begin with anyways. He stopped thinking that way long ago since he was going to be the one making victims out of people rather than he being the victim of his past which then led him to where he was now. He adapted to his new lifestyle. Sort of.

Now, granted, there was one thing she had an advantage of over him; from what he recalled, her picture had never been shown. It was a description of who she was and why the law wanted to bring her in for questioning. At the time he was pretty good at putting the pieces together -once he received the bounty, that is- and was able to track where she had been. If it weren't for her gracious interference he would have captured her and turned her in for the reward. Now, he most likely would not have met the Constantine brothers so perhaps Fate had, all along, wanted something different to occur. Why did it have to be at the cost of his health, though?

His poster, on the other hand... yes, it did have a picture of it because, as described by others, he was a 'son of a bitch that needed to be put down like the dog he was'. Quite a few people wanted his head by that point and they weren't necessarily those who had been affected by their loved one's deaths. Jealous bounty hunters and even those who had contracted him for jobs in the first place would have benefited from his death which was possibly a reason why he had wanted to defy that. He wanted to get the last laugh and, as of right now, he succeeded in this because he changed who he was. Though, if Sofia was true to her word that might change very soon...

Sebastien narrowed his eyes at the woman as she spoke. So, he was right- she was taking the road of the innocent victim. Or, more accurately, the innocent 'Oh, clearly you're not talking about me. And who would believe you even though that is in fact me?' In a sense he had pulled the same thing... Actually, he did the same exact thing. He would say that he stooped to her level, though he really had no level to stoop down to or above -he simply did what he did to make sure he could survive for another day. "My intentions are my own; whether they are bad or good depends on who is at the opposite side." He was still not convinced that she had meant it; it more seemed like she was reaching for whatever sympathetic side Sebastien may have had in order for him to... what? He wasn't even too sure what the woman's intention was concerning the subject. He may have put two and two together eventually, but she could have saved herself a lot of woe if she had kept her mouth shut. She had a reason. "We are dancing around the issue, however; why have you brought all of this up? If you are as smart as you act then you should realize that intentionally bringing such subjects up will not work out in your favor. What the hell do you want." And there it was: a slight flare in his speech accompanied by the briefest expression of ire. He had showed something besides apathy and neutrality -though the emotion that he showed might not have been the one she had wanted to see. At this point, however, he was done playing this game. Either he was going to walk out of the front door with his supplies or he was going to exit through a window and lay low for a while. Maybe skip town eventually. But in no way was he going to continue to entertain whatever sort of plan this woman had. He was going to get answers and he was going to get them now.
