personality
Adeline Deuxchapeau, also known as Addy Two Hats or more common still simply Two Hats, has the misfortune of inheriting her parents least endearing traits, being as haughty as her father and circumspect as her mother. She considers herself apart from other beings; above those lessers, humans and other creatures with their short, brutal, and often futile little lives. She pities them on the main, but finds their frantic need for consumption and the dizzying pace of their lives disconcerting. Still, they are inventive; perhaps because of the many handicaps of their race they seem to do more with their time than others.

But if she holds herself above other beings, it is for the Fae, her own kind, that she holds a true disliking. For despite being long in years they can be just as lean in reason, with ideas calcified by age rather than expanded, and too often ennui leads them to commit acts of mischief for no other reason than their own entertainment.

Though permitted to cross to the lands of the Fae, the Other World is no home to her, though she finds herself equally uncomfortable in the realms of man. Honorable as her kind are known to be, she's always true to her word, but her favors never come without a price. As eventful as her life has proven she's no stranger to violence, and has no issue with taking life, though she considers casual cruelty beneath her. Two Hats has a rarely seen soft spot for children. They are still pure, full of potential; like a budding seedling on the forest floor, who knows how the future will shape them.

history
Adeline was one of the first children born of union between the Memegwesi, the Little People who dwell in the pure places of the New World, and the Bright Ones, the Seelie Fae. Her father had come with Cartier's party on a mission of exploration of his own, and was lured away from them by her mother, who was curious in her own right about these strange new beings. They lived together in peace for many years, and in time three children were born, Adeline being the youngest. But eventually the world found them as more people began to come and settle in the area that was their home, and perhaps inevitably violence erupted. Adeline's birth was marked by the beginning of what would prove a long and bloody war that would last a hundred years and encroach upon the tiny island that they had made their home, the small family growing ever more reclusive and wary and protective of their shores.

When age claimed her father's life, Adeline's mother decided to leave their home and go west, to find a place yet untouched by men. Adeline's brother, the eldest, tired of the strife that men had brought to their land, decided to go with her. Adeline and her sister however chose a different course, though for very different reasons.

Her sister, lonely and desiring to find a place and people to call her own, was enamored by stories their father had told of the lands beyond the sea. She wanted to go and find her father's people and what kin they had among them. Adeline, seeing the voracious nature of the new comers and believing it was only a matter of time before they sought expansion, also wanted to learn what manner of people her father had sprung from. Both young and idealistic they craved acceptance, and with their life spent in the wilds they were ignorant of deception and courtly intrigue.

The Seelie court was not what either of them had expected, nor were they at all prepared for what they found.

Though Fae themselves, they were still held as curiosities at best rather than equals, and at worst as lesser creatures of base blood. Innocent of the implications of what their words meant, they swore an oath of fealty to the Seelie Court and were bound to serve, not quite knowing what the words meant or what their duties would entail. Over the course of more than a hundred years, Adeline has played the part of scout, spy, guard and messenger. A dogsbody to her pureblooded kinsmen. As time passed she grew to resent them, for while she has remained true to the words she swore, she and her sister have not been accorded the respect and acceptance they both so desired. While not formally banished, her inability to hide her discontent has caused her to be given missions far afield, and her newest post in the frontier town of New Hope is just the last of many assignments meant to quell her restive spirit.
